Exploring Life as a Senior in Westborough, MA

Living in Westborough, Mass. is like living in a town I grew up in in Connecticut on many points. It is filled with banks or all kinds of course, churches are everywhere you look, and in the end so are bar/ taverns. It holds numerous retail stores and resturants too. What it is missing is places to actually do things with other people, to mingle and get to know one another. Hard to believe but this is not the first such town I have run into that is this way.

We don’t havea bar/tavern that has karyoke in it here, we don’t havea roller skating rink or even a movie theather it seems. Plenty of Parks are around if you like outdoor walking at least. So, I always wonder what do people really do in Wetsborough, beside working and shopping? I know I am not into exercise clubs or gyms, not at 69 years old, lol. I have tried Taverns and bars here, ranging from Red Heat, to Cold Harbor to Central House and JP’s. What is there really besides drinking and eating in Westborough, that you can meet someone your own age group, chat, have fun, laugh and maybe find someone to be with? Can anyone tell me?

I have heard the suggestions of volunteer work, but even that can be boring. The Senior Center here in Westborough, is slow and usually pretty empty to be honest, about it. So, I branches out to Northboro’s Senior Center which is newer and looked there too. While I can say, I do not dislike Westborough, Mass. I do wonder why it builds so many 55 plus communities and condos, but doesn’t do anything for the Seniors more than just a Senior Center? I don’t have the answer for that myself, as to what it could be. It just seems to me, that if you are going to attract seniors to live here, you should think about those of us seniors, who are single, divorced, or widowed also. Just a suggestion, Westborough is all.

I get bored easily I guess, and I am very creative these days it seems. As we age we tend to be set in our ways and we cary on like there is no other way to be. I admire other seniors who find a wya to do things and keep themselves busy, I just haven’t found a way to do that myself.

I write poetry, I write short stories and i do these blogs. I have ventured to Town Hall Meetings an dlistened to what the town is preparing as far as a new Community Center goes. While i like the idea of sucha community Center being built in town, I think a mistake was made in the buying of the building they paid for. The building should have been better inspected, and now needs additional funding for repairs. Secondly, I find it not very well thought out on the basis of the facts of trying to put Seniors, Veterans and Youth in it at one time. While the seniors would like their privacy and peace and quiet, the youth would not want that. The Veterans are another subject in and of themselves. To place youth in a building near Veterans, who may or may not be suffering from PTSD is definitely not a good idea. I remind some, a Veteran with PTSD can be set off, by a noise, a sound, a word, almost anything that triggers them. So, I do not recommend placing them in a building with youth. While a Senior Citizen may be able to avoid such a conflict, because they tend to understand it better, a youth wil not. So, if I was on one of the committees for the town involved in the Community Center Project I would rethink this, for safety of the youth, as well as to prevent confrontations and problems with the Veterans. Just a suggestion folks, you may agree or disagree, but I think it should be a consideration here.

On Route 9, going down, is a old Movie Theater Building empty now for a long time. If i were the town, I would go through the tax records and try to find who is paying the taxes on it and attempt to purchase it. If the town did that, they could turn that into a Youth Center her in westborough and be putting the youth in an eviroment of their own. I think that would be a good solution to the above problem with the new Community Center. Just an idea folks.

OK, whats the next subject for me, I do not know yet. What I have been trying to do is examine my life as it is today here in Westborough, Mass. the town, the enviroment, the atmosphere, and the people. While the People seem friendly enough and will talk to you if you ask questions, there is still a bit of an air of something about it all. People rush to and fro it seems always in a hurry to come and go. The Library in town needs work and rebuilding as we all know, and yes i have been there too. So whats, the best thing about Westborough, Mass. os my question. Is it the Churches? Is it the Bars/Taverns. The Retail stores and Resturants? Please, tell me, for i know asa senior member of the town now, I am still looking for it, and how to be better intergrated into it.

I do know that the State of Massachuetts overall, has a problem that leads people to call them Massaholes. Now some laugh when I say that and others know of it’s existence. What it really is I have yet to figure out. Yet, it seems, it is definitely a personality thing or an attitude thing here in this state. You either put up with it, or you walk away from it and ignore it, that is the two possiblilties in my mind over it. For I don’t think I shall ever understand it, thats for sure. I also have noticed there is a lot of anger in some people in Massachuetts that I have not seen in other states i have lived in. Why, I have no idea, I wish I knew so I could understand the sudden change of temperment in some people, I have run across. But, life goes on and as a Senior CItizen myself, I know better then to sit there and argue over anything with someone i just met. LOL

Anyway, I think I have asked enough questions, that I can not find answers for in this blog. If there is ever a way to answer these, I hope i can do so in a peaceful manner. Until I do, I shall keep wondering is what I say.
